Date Added: July 13, 2011 08:10:30 AM

Everyone and anyone seems to be able to put together web pages and launch a site online. While it has become a lot easier and cheaper to design and host a site there are certain rules you still have to follow to create that perfect site. Elementary mistakes can make a site slow to load, invisible to search engines and disabled users, and, simply less efficient marketing channel. So why not have a look at some of the basic things you can keep in mind while designing websites yourself.

Make It Legible and Easy on the Eyes

A website is for reading ( unless you have a image site). So, what’s most important is that your visitors should be able to read your content easily without any strain. If they feel any bit uncomfortable accessing the content they’ll flee before you know.

First rule is to contrast the colors appropriately. This starts with the background. Using too many images, or colors that make the foreground less legible happens a lot. Unless you want them to focus on your background use a subtle soft background that will not cloud tehtext but actually enhance its visibility.

Second is to use right fonts. People go crazy with font sizes, styles, colors and attributes. Using bold too often. Using inappropriate font, such as, Comic Sans when a Times Roman would do is a frequent mistakes. Just make it readable by keeping it simple.

Use Images Wisely

A picture speaks a thousand words. That’s the only reason images are placed on webpages- to communicate and express. They are not to display your love for modern art or cubism. A website is apiece of communication intended for a specific purpose if your images donot fit in the line of communication get rid of them even if it’s your best photo with your deceased dog.

Navigate Your Visitors Correctly

Give it a thought, why do you have navigation on your website? Simply to help them find content easily on your site. Larger a site more important it becomes to have a good navigation. First rule of thumb is to keep it simple with a minimum number of links on each page. You’ll often come across sites with hundreds of links on each page. Home page would simply be a cluster of links. That not only confuses the visitors but also tells you that the site designer put zero effort in arranging the content of the site. Don’t make it a maze. Categorize your content and then find ways to link in a way that every page of you site is accessible form every other page of your site.

Validate to W3C

Even though a lot of guys treat this validation with a pinch of salt it’s not a disadvantage in any way. It simply means that your code- both CSS and HTML, complies with the latest W3C standards. Doing this gives you extra points when it comes to several modern browsers and search engines who are always up to date with technologies.
